Honoring Indigenous Approaches to Palliative Care
I am honored to highlight the work of the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) in supporting Indigenous patients and families navigate palliative and end-of-life care. These resources have been instrumental in shaping the way I care for my Indigenous patients, as part of my ongoing journey of unlearning and relearning in clinical practice on the traditional and unceded territories of the Musqueam, Tsleil-Waututh, and Squamish Nations.
I encourage you to explore and bookmark the following FNHA resources. I trust you will find them as valuable and transformative as I have:
- Advance Care Planning Resources – A comprehensive page with tools and guidance tailored to Indigenous perspectives on serious illness and end-of-life care.
- Honoring My Journey: My Advance Care Planning Basket – A printable workbook that supports individuals in reflecting on and documenting their wishes.
- Serious Illness Conversation Guide – Adapted Version – Developed through consultations with Elders, this guide includes key adaptations such as:
- Using clear and direct language
- Including family throughout the conversation
- Building and maintaining a foundation of trust
- Seeking permission before continuing
- Making space for storytelling
- Honor Your Journey: Advance Care Planning Video – A culturally grounded video resource for patients and families.
