Overview
The Vancouver Division of Family Practice recognizes the importance of supporting patients and improving maternity care in the City of Vancouver. The Maternity Care Committee’s activities and initiatives evolve from year-to-year and include a mix of education and learning events, resources, networking opportunities, and quality improvement initiatives. The Division’s efforts in improving maternity care in the City of Vancouver culminated in various projects and two flagship maternity initiatives – our online portal for maternity care in Vancouver – PregnancyVancouver.ca, and our award-winning CME series delivered in collaboration with UBC Continuing Professional Development (CPD) – But I Don’t Do Maternity Care! Many Family Doctors in Vancouver specialize in pregnancy care, supporting patients throughout pregnancy, labour, and birth. As Family Physicians (FPs), they also provide care for a wide range of health concerns, both related and unrelated to pregnancy.

Perinatal Services BC have put together the Honouring Our Babies Safer Sleep Toolkit: Facilitator Guide and Cards 3rd Edition 2023, including important information and recommendations on how to facilitate conversations with Indigenous parents/caregivers on safer sleep options. It encourages informed shared decision making on safer sleep with a focus on the strengths of Indigenous knowledge, cultural values and practices using a two-eyed seeing approach.

The Maternity Care for BC (MC4BC) Program is designed to help family physicians expand their skills and experience in obstetrical care. This program offers peer mentorship, financial compensation, and other supports as you integrate maternity care into your practice. It’s an excellent pathway for developing competency in prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care, making it ideal for those looking to add maternity care as part of their services.
The St. Paul’s Maternity Clinic is a family-medicine-run clinic providing holistic maternity care, from conception through postpartum.

Primary Care Networks in Vancouver
The Primary Care Networks (PCNs) in Vancouver are part of a collaborative effort to ensure residents have access to the care they need, when they need it. Whether it’s maternity care or managing your ongoing health, PCNs aim to provide comprehensive, integrated healthcare services by working closely with family doctors, nurse practitioners, and specialists. Committee Members:
The Maternity Care Committee, led by the Vancouver Division of Family Practice, is dedicated to building a strong, integrated network of maternity care providers. The committee consists of members who reflect the diverse cross-section of family physicians who provide maternity care as part of their general practice. They provide leadership in networking, promote integrated maternity care, and support patients throughout their maternity experience.
The primary objectives of the Maternity Care Committee are to foster the network of FPMs to keep practitioners connected, support clinicians who do not regularly provide maternity care, and to promote FPMs as a viable option for maternity care to the wider public.
