An online learning session facilitated by Live Educate Transform Society (LETS).

As part of the Division's efforts to support JEDI learning and improve patient care, we are pleased to partner with LET'S, an organization entirely run by disabled and neurodivergent folks, most of whom are also 2SLGBTQIA+, who utilize their lived expertise to create essential change.

Remuneration: Physician members are eligible for up to 1.5 hours of remuneration at the current JCC sessional rate. Resident members are compensated under a different collective agreement, which already includes time for engaging with community. All attendees will receive a $25 DoorDash voucher.

Session summary:

This introductory session will focus on understanding ableist notions under the medical model of disability, and how we can strive towards disability justice in healthcare.

LET's Disability Awareness workshops gives you the tools to understand what disability is, the types of disability, the current language of disability, what ableism is, how you can actively work to fight against it, and tips for disabled people and allies alike to better ensure equity in all that you do.

You will learn about:

  • What is ableism and disability justice
  • Medical model of disability vs. social model of disability vs. other models
  • How disabled patients are impacted by ableism and systemic barriers in their access to healthcare
  • Examples of ableist assumptions and biases in healthcare
  • Person first versus identity first language, and other word choices to be less ableist
