How Has Practicing Long Term Care Evolved? By Dr. Steve Larigakis

Interested in a career pivot? I’ve practiced Emergency Medicine, FP Obstetrics, Rural Medicine, and Longitudinal Family Practice during the last 40 years. Today Long-Term Care (LTC) is the focus of my work. LTC may not be as sexy as Emergency Medicine, but it is nonetheless incredibly gratifying and makes a significant impact on people's lives.

Like EM, LTC is team-based care working with nurses, pharmacists, physios, and a host of other allied professionals, without the constant time and resource pressure. You set your own schedule to visit the care home and have remote access to resident information through secure platforms.

In the past, LTC was very much a solo activity. Over the past decade it has evolved into a well supported career choice. Through the Divisions’ LTC Initiative, there is excellent education, on-call support, and financial compensation. You work with colleagues and maintain connection with a wider medical community. It can serve as a welcome day out of the office without overhead costs, or as a way to stay engaged when moving to semi-retirement.

Moreover, if you are interested in teaching, there are opportunities to mentor Family Practice Residents and Medical Students in the art of geriatric and LTC medicine.

Medicine is fascinating, and we’re privileged to be able to re-invent ourselves and reinvigorate our practices, keeping life interesting and staying well. LTC could be that pivot.
